2000 Vauxhall Zafira odd noise behind centre dash

As soon as key is turned an odd whirring noise starts behind centre console and continues whilst driving. Mechanic told wife this is an ambient fan. Anyone come across this before? Is it relatively easy access easy fix? help for novice DIY mechanic please.
