Difficulty engaging gears

Car running fine today until all of a sudden all gears became difficult to engage; managed to get the car home but then unable to release the clutch fluid reservoir cap to check fluid level and cannot see level from the outside as the plastic reservoir is too opaque to see the fluid; am planning to seek assistance from local garage tomorrow so hope it's not a case of replacing clutch or gear-box
