Spanner light, juddering and rev counter does not work

Car Starts, run for a while then the spanner light comes on, car starts hunting and the rev counter goes to zero, mostly around town. It comes and goes. Take it on the motorway and it seems because of the higher speed it goes back to normal. Have filled tank with top grade diesel and red ex but this has not helped.

I'd concern myself with the rev counter,
many modern diesels relay on RPM signal for correct injection function.
No signal or incorrect signal will give most if not all your symptoms.
