2001 Vauxhall Zafira intermittent engine lights and engine cutting out / emergency mode

Car: Vauxhall Zafira
Year: 2001
Variant: 2.0 DTi
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
This problem occurs usually just as the car reaches operating temperature, and usually on de-acceleration. The engine management lights come on and the engine either cuts out if travelling slowly or if the car is going faster
the engine goes into emergency mode.
If I then restart the engine, the same 2 lights initially come on, but as I drive off, usually the lights go off and the car then runs normal for the rest of the journey. This only happens once per journey, unless I stop for a period long enough for the engine to cool slightly.
I have changed the temperature sensor but no different.
I have also had a basic diagnostic test which indicated the injector pump, but was told that it was not necessarily the pump but could be a faulty ECU.
For the past week the car has miraculously run without incident.
Also if it is the pump I believe it would cost in the region of £1000, which does not make it economically viable.

clean EGR valve out if possible or replace. check vacuum control valves for EGR. check MAP sensor and check crank sensor. my first point of call would be the crank sensor located in lower front side of engine.
