Odometer faulty its gone back to zero

something weid happened today I was driving I looked at my odometer and it had lost 6,000 miles off the clock and the trip meter had six straight down lines instead of numbers,I thought thats weird so i reset the trip meter and my odometer reset itself back to zero, I tried holding in the trip meter button for 10second no joy, I tried removing the instrument fuse and replaced it still my odometer remains at zero, when im driving the miles do clock back up and all the back lights do work, I have drawn a blank as to what it is, does anyone have any ideas,

Sounds like faulty instrument panel cluster .

Thank you, everything else works fine on the instrument cluster, I dont know much about cars but if i buy a secondhand cluster will I have my previous milage or will the milage from the donor car.
