Hair coming out of my tail pipe!

2008 Vauxhall Zafira 5 door automatic
Car: Vauxhall Zafira
Year: 2008
Variant: 5 door automatic
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The sound dampening material is coming out of the tail pipe of my 08 Zaf. The Murketts Vax dealer in Huntingdon is telling me I need both the muffler center pipe and muffler with tail pipe replaced. This is not a problem an 08' model should have. The cost is over 400 GBP! I don't know if I believe them. First of all when I bought the Zaf used the deal failed to complete the initial used car inspection and handed it to me with some electrical faults and a non working air conditioning unit, then it took them over a week to fix the two problems and complete the used car inspection correctly... they also sacked their employee who sold me the car.

I bought a Vax warranty from the dealer for the Zaf but they are not honoring it. It does say that the exhaust system is not covered but if they never inspected it in the first place I take issue with the denial of the warranty.

Any help or thought welcome please!

I am going to take the zaf to kwick-fit to get their opinion and possibly use their service.

Thanks

Cant see how they would be liable for an exhaust on a car of that year .The exhaust is a servicable item and it tells you on your extended warranty that's it's not covered .They cant see inside an exhaust either to check .Par for the course on that car .

Fair enough the exhaust is not covered by warranty which is fair enough if the exhausts failure wasn't caused by something else that was covered.
If the sound proofing IS covered under the warranty terms and that failure has caused a secondary item to fail then they shouldn't be charging you for it and replacing the secondary item free of charge.
Basically you need to check/confirm sound proofing is covered.

I understand it not being covered I accept that... sort of... it goes back to the dealer not properly checking the vehicle before turning it over to me. In my mind it is now already suspect. That said I still dont understand why both sections of muffler need to be replaced. shouldn't it just be the rear section with tail pipe and an 08' is still a bit new for this type of problem with the exhaust system. Am I correct on this assumption?

The " sound proofing " i.e fibreglass coming out of a 4/5 year exhaust would not be covered by any warranty you have on car . I have had cars in the workshop where this fault has been caused by the owners actions . You dont mention how long you have had car for and mileage .

It's easier , better and usually cheaper to replace both parts rather than replace the other part a few weeks / months later .

Had crossed wires, you meant exhaust silencer sound proofing right.
That wouldn't be covered though as it's a non-warranty item there's nothing stoppingyou purchasing the parts and replacing them yourself or searching around for cheapest quote for fitting.

@ whittingehame: we have had the car less that 5 months, bought it off of their Q network and only do around town driving with it. it is something that needs to be replaced quickly? could it damage the car if I let it go for a while? thanks for all the help.

It's POSSIBLE that the collapse of the inside of the silencer COULD block and restrict flow of exhaust gases causing problems . But usually if anything they will blow any remaining out .If it was my car , wasn't noisy and the time didn't suit I would just drive car to be honest . Dont restrict pricing to Kwik fit for replacing . Get a quote and phone around , playing one against the other . You might be surprised in the saving doing that . Also check warranty on systems , sometimes varies .

Leaving it for a little while should cause no real adverse effects.
If it was my car i'd just buy the rear box £30-£60, O-rings £2-£3 and replace it myself on a weekend

If the exhaust or cat got blocked the car would lose power/ stop but worth chancing if just local use , should be o.k . Fitting a part exhaust rather than the complete assembly usually means a shorter warranty or it did when I ran a few exhaust depots . Apart from that you have the problem of seperating the centre section from the tail pipe . Usually seized and rusted which can cause problems further up the system if you got to hammer off if heating not available . False economy in just fitting the tail box as the centre exhaust is just as old also and due replacing at round about that year .Hope this helps .
