2008 Vauxhall Vivaro rear brakes sticking

Car: Vauxhall Vivaro
Year: 2008
Variant: 2.0 diesel swb with tail gate. Ex AA
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
This problem has been coming on for a while. Traced it to the handbrake mechanism on the rear calipers. When the handbrake is released the the calliper mechanism does not release resulting in a very hot brake if you try to drive the van. Temporary solution is to get under the back of the van and use a hammer to knock the handbrake mechanism to the off position. Of course you can't use the handbrake at all otherwise you're back to square one. It'll have to be working in order to pass an mot which is where I'm at now. I've improved it by removing the nut on the mechanism on the back of the caliper, tapping off the operating lever and working the mechanism free with wd40. Improved a lot but still not quite fully releasing as hoped.

This is a known and common fault on that vehicle . Once freed off , coat with Copper grease and replace seal .

Take the pads out and screw the piston back into the callipers.
Then fit new pads,
Then with the h/brake cable off work the calliper quadrent lever back and forward as you have been doing to ratchet advance the piston back out until it grips the disk.
Now you looking for the absolute minimum of this little lever to move before the pads grip,
less the better.
What you don't want is for a lot of the small lever movement.
shoot for around 20mm.
Now refit the cable and adjust to the correct number of clicks.
I can usually get anything through a Mot with this system provided the levers on the callipers move freely.
