Smoke coming from the dashboard

2002 Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 diesel
Car: Vauxhall Vivaro
Year: 2002
Variant: 1.9 diesel
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
The interior lights had stopped working and the fuse had blown. I changed the fuse (15amp) with a new one (10amp) and smoke started to come out from under the dash by the steering column.

The only way I could stop this was to disconnect the battery. Has anyone got any ideas what this could be?

Would be very grateful for your help.

Body control module is in there, absolute pain in the hands to get to,and the muti plug socket is positioned in such a way that ANY fluid spilled around the speedo binicle goes straight down into it.
only other thing in there is the intensity adjuster for the illuminations, around where your left knee would be.
