1996 Vauxhall Vectra battery or alternator

my car starts fine until i use my headlights for any period of time , it then wont start next time i try to use it , goes well apart from the passenger door keeps locking and then wont unlock ??( prob not related) do i need a new battery? ive charged it several times now or is it the alternator? and are petrol and diesel alternators the same ? do you know any where i can get mine repaired nr salisbury in wiltshire ... thanks guys its hard being a woman in amans world lol

It could be one or both . If the battery has a weak cell it wont hold charge .Get the battery load tested and the alternator output tested also .Most fast fit centres or good accessory stores will do so usually foc , while you wait .
