When i start my car the engine management light comes on and the exhaust sounds like it is blowing.Sometimes the light goes off and the car sounds perfect but if the light stays on the blowing noise gets louder and the car gets very sluggish and if feels stiff on the power steering,this can happen at any time and may stay on for hours or not at all.When it has been in the garage no faults. Any ideas please

If it has Electric-Hydraulic Power Steering Pump (EHPS) fitted , check alternator output with meter .
