Thanks for the replies guys.
I spoke to Vauxhall. They confirmed on my Vectra that the bulb is part of the circuit, so with a blown bulb, the circuit is broken and the battery won't receive charge from the alternator.
Obviously I think it was just an indication bulb in years gone by...
