Lots of smoke

1996 Vauxhall Vectra LS 16V
Car: Vauxhall Vectra
Year: 1996
Variant: LS 16V
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I just bought a vectra and the problem I have is that there is a lot of darkish grey smoke from the exhaust and a lot more on acceleration....there is no loss of power and there is no increase of temperature

Sounds like the start of a head gasket going or could be a valve stem seal. Get a mechanic to have a quick look as its obviously burning oil and could be causing damage.

well according to the paperwork i got with the car it had a full headset done already and now i am just wondering if the stem seals can be done without the full strip down . also is there any chance it could be the rings cheers

Good point mate could be the rings, trouble is that aint no easy job. You got a torque wrench?

hello there you said that the car has had a new head gasket set the one thing that has not been mentioned is the valve guides as these are very common to wear out over the years and can only be replaced via head removal or the head gasket hasnt been done correctly ie head not been skimmed the first thing that i will suggest is do a compression test on all cyclinders this will eliminate the piston rings and the gasket if the readings you get from the compression test are all in the green on the guage
