warning light came on for exhaust emissions staying on and car running as if its low on petrol ie spluttering a bit .never had this before.

Many possible causes , only guessing otherwise , best to get a diagnostic scan and see what shows .

Hi I am Vortash don't know if it will help but my son has a Vectra and he had the same problem he replaced his lamba sensor ( oxygen sensor sticking out of downpipe ) and the cam sensor and his problem was solved . Regards Vortash
