2002 Vauxhall Vectra battery light stays on for approx 5 mins

When starting the car, the battery light stays on for approx. 5 mins, and none of the dashboard instruments work. After 5 mins, the battery light goes out, and the instruments start to work.
All other electrics work during this period.

Could be alternator or wiring / connector. Easy to test with meter .
