2000 Vauxhall Vectra stopping/cutting out unexpectedly

Car: Vauxhall Vectra
Year: 2000
Variant: 2lt auto
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My vectra has twice stopped (if it were a gear car I'd say stalled) unexpectedly. First time on a slip road to a motorway after which I took it to a main dealer who changed "something" to do with the air flow. 3 months later it's done it again at a junction. I have to turn off the engine and then it starts again. The steering now feels heavy it's very slow moving off at junctions, lights etc and sometimes it's taking a long time to change gear. Whining in the lower gears too! Any ideas anyone?
