2001 Vauxhall Vectra heater not working, just cold air & engine overheating.

Car: Vauxhall Vectra
Year: 2001
Variant: 2.2 SRI Manual
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Hi this is my first post, basically car starts and idles with no problem, heater blows cold air. Drive for longer than 5 minutes and temp gauge goes up to red line. Radiator fan seems to be intermittent and when car is switched off fan runs for up to 6 minutes. Oil and water seem to be fine. I do get a message on the dashboard ref Water Coolant but it is full?
Hope someone can shed some light on this before I take it to the garage.
Cheers

Could be something simple like jammed thermostat or major job.If no emulsified oil or excessive white smoke out back , I'd check thermostat first .
