1999 Vauxhall Vectra engin temperature

My car temperature is runnig after warming up at just under 80 on the temperature gauge, i beleive it is down to a faulty thermostat or coolant temerature sensor
can some one advis me on what sort of affect this has on the engines running efficentcy will this have detremental effect on th engine

it seems to be running too cold could be a thermostat stuck open has it overheated in the past as if so the stat can jam open this can cause engine to run on warm up map and use extra fuel.wot did it run at b4? are you sure its not just the gauge

Thanks for your reply, the engine has not run hot previously. i have noticed a slight change in the cars performance and increased fuel consumption. it previously ran at a constant 90 on the temperature gauge, your reply as helped me to understand what effect this problem is having on my car
