Is it not just the electric fan on rad.cutting in ?

Sorry to sound stupid but how would I find this out or were would I look?
Would this also cause the temp to move up and down??

No problem .The electric fan is fitted onto radiator and is triggered by a thermostatic switch .When the temp reaches a certain point , the fan will cut in and run to cool rad. and then cut out again as temp drops. That's why temp guage goes up / down as fan kicks in .Sometimes ,especially if is wet ,as the radiator gets really hot , when fan cuts in it blows out steam .This is just surface water/rain lying on rad. and as long as there is no coolant loss is normal .It tends to be in stop /start traffic that fan cuts in and out .In normal driving the cold air pushing through rad . means fan is never needed as temp is normal .Hope this helps.

I understand now. Well my coolant light was on couple weeks ago so filled it up and went off and hasn't been on since so hopefully all good. Thanks very very much pal.....you've been a real help to me and saved me going the garage were they have a field day with my cash!!!I was just worried when I seen the smoke when it was actually raining really bad and I was in very slow traffic and the temp gauge moved up but when oved off it dropped back down. So I have nothing to worry about??

Keep an eye on coolant level and if it doesn't drop , should be ok .Remember if topping up to use antifreeze , or a mixture .Water will weaken strength of antifreeze if used on it's own.
