Spanner service light on when engine running

about a week ago i had an engine management light come on read it with my code reader and it gave fault as air leak. reset code left for some time did not come on again but now the spanner through car light came on today and engine has gone into safe mode have lost power because of this , any idea what it my be as code reader does not pick up any faults as engine light not on or stored information .

If light on and in safe mode there must be stored fault code .Need to get a scanner that will retrieve code that has triggered the light . i
