could be exhaust or fuel fumes does the exhaust make abnormal noise when reved?
check under bonnet igg on no.2 so fuel pump runs for sign of fuel leak(take care)
does fuel cap seal correctly?
does car run smoothly, if missfire occurs unburnt fuel can smell a bit eggy!

Hi, I've just had a similar problem in my 97 vectra. In my case a small rubber hose had perished cracked. If you look under the hood, you will find a small banana shaped hose running fron the cylinder head rocker cover to the main air intake hose (running from your air filter to the inlet manifold). I think this is some kind of clean air system, letting clean air get to the exhaust ports so that unburnt fuel is burnt up in the exhaust (many motorbikes use similar systems). Anyway, if this hose is cracked (as mine was) exhaust fumes will leak into the engine bay right by the intake for the cockpit air system! A new hose is only ~£10 and is a doddle to fit.
You might want to check this .. could be what's happening in yours...
