1998 Vauxhall Vectra no drive

Set off from traffic lights yesterday seemed like I hadn't got in to gear properly so resell tend first and no drive just a horrendous noise sounded like gearbox was scraping along floor so managed to pull over some smoke from under the bonnet and oil dripping on to road got a tow home but could not go above about 10mph or the horrendous noise started please help

If manual box , could be clutch collapsed or a driveshaft .

If clutch collapsed what would cause that and yes it is a manual box
