sometimes it comes on when it does and you sit idle the revs drop and rise it splutters from the exuast it also does sometimes when your driving along .

idle speed control valve wants cleaning /replacing if cleaning fails but these are available from all motor factors at a reasonable prices / air flow sensor between the air box and inlet manifold but clean or replace the valve first

I replaced bothe idle control valve and the air flow meter and solved my problem, cleaning the air flow with carb cleaner will solve it for a while but makes the problem much worse when it returswhich it will as it clogs much more easily and revs run very high so i would replace it, cost you about £60 for both parts on ebay. Good luck
