Quite an easy job to do stat is on the end of the engine block on the n/s by the battery take out the battery and casing ( makes access easier ) remove the turbo air hose and the relay solenoid you will then have easy access to the stat its only 3 bolts on the stat and the hoses l was dreading doing mine but was suprised how easy it was just make sure that you dont lose the o ring when fitting new stat stat cost about £50 00

Thank you Zanderman,
That tip of removing the battery and casing is good and I think will be key.

Right it is now fixed and road tested up to temp. Heat in the car and the temp guagw works again. So to add to the infomation that Victor gave me, some small tips for anyone attempting a thermostat change on a similar engine.

Disconnect and remove battery and cradle (remove the lid, makes removal and refitting easier). Thanks to Zanderman
Remove the air pipe ( the large diameter hose that goes from intercooler at the bottom to inlet at the top). Unclip the sensor wire.
Remove the 10mm nut that holds the hose carrier, it's below and to the right (as you look at it) of the sensor.
Remove the hose immediately above (1cm) from the housing. leave the other two for now.
Now undo both top and bottom 13mm bolts and remove carefully.
Drawing the housing towards you makes it easier to disconnect the final two small hoses and the large hose at the end to the left.

Refit in reverse, with the tip from Victor, use some lithium or high temperature grease sparingly on the O ring, it helps the seal but also holds the ring in place for refitting.

Locate the top bolt first and screw in half way, Then use a mirror to ensure that the bottom hole is aligned. Use some tissue or blue tack to make sure that the bolt stays in the socket. I didn't and spent a couple of hours undoing the undertray to no avail, it was then the bumper underwrap, that's where it ended up. not funny when the car is on the flat and it's getting dark.

So the job is done and I hope this helps somebody.

Thanks for the tip Zanderman.
