Eratic starting ( white smoke when it will not start )

2002 Vauxhall Vectra 2.2 DTI LS
Car: Vauxhall Vectra
Year: 2002
Variant: 2.2 DTI LS
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My car has started to start eratically.somedays it starts but when it doesnt it is bad.Got charged £125 and told contaminated fuel last month but same problem occurs.Same guy then came and removed hose from beneath egr valve and sprayed fluid in to help start the car.It started to run but was very lumpy(just idle revs). He then kept his foot on the accelerator for about 5 mins until the car revved. All the time white smoke was coming out of the exhaust but after running good it disappeared and was fine.He now says it could be an injector.I have cleaned the egr valve, there is no loss of water, had all filters replaced plus oil.No engine management light comes on during this problem. What is the problem. Is it srcapper or a simple solution?

White smoke:

White smoke is caused by raw, un-burnt fuel passing into the exhaust stream. Common causes include:
· Incorrect fuel injection timing
· Defective fuel injectors
· Low cylinder compression

Low cylinder compression may be caused by leaking valves, sticking piston rings, ring wear, cylinder wear, or cylinder glaze. When white smoke occurs at cold start and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing.
Continuous evidence of white smoke indicates a mechanical defect, or incorrect fuel timing.
