when engine starts from cold it sounds more like a diesel than a petrol but as soon as the engine gets warm the noise stops

If you mean the noise is at the top of the engine, it could be the oil not getting thru quick enough. Try an engine flush then an oil and filter change making sure you use good quality oil and the right grade ( check the hand book)
