probably need to get a fault code reading first. At least then you will no where to start.

The engine management light on my 58 plate lit permanently (about 18000 miles then). This was traced to a faulty temperature sensor at the bottom of the radiator. That your car has problems when the temperature reaches the operating zone, it might be worth checking the sensor as a wrong signal from here would initiate the 'limp' operating mode which the car is designed to go into under fault conditions.
