1999 Vauxhall Vectra rpm and speedo don't work (sometimes)

Car: Vauxhall Vectra
Year: 1999
Variant: 2.2 js
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
so when you turn the car on either the rpm and speedo both don't work and are stuck on zero, or they both do work perfectly fine... car still runs perfect without instruments working... another thing i noticed is that if ever the instruments are working and a stall the car the instruments will stop working.... i can live without the rpm dial, but i need the speedo.... also, once the instruments don't work it isn't a case of turn the car back on they'll work, usually the car has to be off for a fair while for the instruments to start working again..,. i'm stumped as to why they'd only work sometimes.

just a suggestion check to see if the alternator is overcharging when the vehicle is running should be about 14.7 volts ,i had one once that did the same thing when the alternator was faulty

oh ok thanks, if this happens to be the problem what are my options, as i know a bit about cars but i don't wanna be messing around too much with the stuff myself... in other words is it a simple fix or is the issue more of a replace the unit? thank you very much

If alternator is found to be faulty, then should be a simple fix to replace...
