1996 Vauxhall Vectra too much petrol intake 15mpg

i bought a vauxhall vectra last week.since i have drove it.its only been doing 15 to 20 miles to gallon, which is not normal for this car.on log book it says 1.6,but looking at engine no says 1.8 and backbox on this car is twin tail pipe off sri.im confused with this.i have checked most thingx on this car,but dont know why so much petrol.can u help
