2004 Vauxhall Meriva rattle on driver's side gets worse with distance and worse at 60mph

Car: Vauxhall Meriva
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.6 Life Semi Auto
Categories: Leaks & Noises
My Meriva has developed a rattling noise, as if there was a spanner under the bonnet. It is worse on uneven roads, road humps, and at 60 mph, but doesn't appear to be a classic sign of a tracking problem. The steering anti roll bars were replaced approximately 10 months ago and the passenger side spring in February this year, after hitting a deep pothole in the darkness. It has done 120,000 miles from new and approximately 9,000 miles since last service. Please can someone advise?

Assuming that there actually ISN'T a spanner rattling around under the bonnet... you ought to check the front coil springs again. I know that you mention you have had one of them changed recently but that doesn't mean that either or both haven't snapped once more. There appears to be a whole load of poor quality coil springs going through the parts system at the moment.

Turning the front wheels onto full left or right lock, you should be able to reach in and feel with your hand into the tray that holds the base of the spring. By carefully fumbling around, you may come across a snapped coil end, sitting in the tray and rattling.

Do make sure that your car is securely parked before trying this, for obvious reasons!
