Vauxhall Meriva when key is turned, nothing happens. battery is good.

Door unlocked on command. Got in, turned the key. Nothing. Not even a click. No power to anything in the console. Looked in the engine bay, seems okay but the fan kept turning on. Locked the doors again, at least that works! Called RAC who tried everything they could think of, nothing helped. Checked all the fuses, ran a pair of jumper leads across but same result so the battery is not the problem. They suggested I call an auto electrician but it's the day after Christmas...
