2005 Vauxhall Meriva eps light coming on when reversing

When reversing the EPS light comes on (Electronic Power Steering) when this happens the steering becomes impossible and i have to turn the engine off and back on and the problem goes, obviously this is dangerous when reversing onto busy traffic.
I took the car to a Vauxhall dealer and they did a diagnositic test but unfortunately the computer didn't pick up a fault and i am going to take it back again to see if they can do this test again.
Does anyone know what the problem is and if the diagnostic test doesn't pick up a problem is there anything that can be done to solve this problem as i can't keep putting up with this?

we have had the same problem on one of our customers cars it was the steering rack
