Recently had this problem! Thought at first it was simply a 'bulb' issue. Turned out to be fractured insulation in that part of the loom between the tail-gate and the nearside 'D-post' (i.e. the so-called flexible bit!) with the potential to cause multiple short-circuits. In my case, affecting the stop-lamp circuit only, but with the potential to involve HRW, rear wiper, tailgate lock, etc.

The replacement part-loom readily available from VX at around £26.00 and fairly easy to fit, without need to completely dismantle the vehicle, unlike dashboard instrument lighting!

Problem lies in the both the grade of PVC insulation and the routeing of the loom. Insulation is 'hard' even before recent plummet in temperatures. With regard to the routeing, each time the tail-gate is opened, the loom is subjected to flexing that is concentrated over a length of 100mm or less, which is the worst abuse of electrical conductors. It should have been designed to subject the loom to torsional stresses instead, by having the loom parallel with the hinge line.

When I enquired at my local dealer about the loom, he said 'it's usually the driver's door flexible that goes'. So maybe I've got that to look forward to!

Hope this is of use to someone!
