2011 Vauxhall Meriva brake pedal light on start up

when I went to start the car, the brake pedal light came on and the car won't try to start, switch off , took out the key and the light went out, put the key back in and all was ok ... any reasons.? , new owner had the car about 3 week am I doing something wrong?

Put your foot on the brake!
A lot of cars these days won't even turn over on the key until the brake pedal is pressed.
Or even if one of the brake light bulbs is out.
