Ignition problem

Car opened on fob, but wouldnt start. no resistance to key when turned in barrell. Then all dash lights were on even after removing key and wouldnt lock on fob. After unplugging the ignition switch the car would lock and open on fob. Does this suggest that the barrel or switch are at fault? The problem re-occurred when I re-fixed the switch cable.

I would try the switch first .

In my case the ignition barrel was the cause, the mechanic who changed it said that it was a fairly common occurrence!
