Idling and cold start problem

2005 Vauxhall Meriva 1.7cdti
Car: Vauxhall Meriva
Year: 2005
Variant: 1.7cdti
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
hi. the car is a Vauxhall Meriva 1.7 2005 with 72000 miles. i bought this car privately and since i have had it the car doesn't like starting up, i turn the cars ignition over and the car starts fine but unless i keep my foot on the accelerator the car cuts out as soon as the revs drop, after keeping my foot on the accelerator for a few minutes the car will then idle however the revs are bouncing up and down. this continues for 5 minutes until the car is warm. just lately the car has also been cutting out during a gear change however this has only happened a few times. i have took it to a garage and have had a new EGR valve and a new fuel rail and sensor. i think the mechanic doesn't know what the problem is and plans on changing the parts bit by bit with me footing the bill for them all. does anyone have any ideas?

Have you had the 'idle speed control valve checked/cleaned??

hi no i haven't had the idle valve cleaned or checked, but would this explain the cutting out when changing gear as i fear that this is also linked to the idling problem

by how you describe it sounds like air in the system, first thing that should be done is a new fuel filter fitted, while changing the filter the colour of fuel should be noted and any metal particals present.
Also an injector leak off test would be a good idea along with leak off pipes checking

hi thanks for your reply, the car has had a recent service so the fuel filters should of been done then? also the injectors have been checked and cleaned and are working fine.

There is a bulletin available about this at vauxhall.

The fault usually lies with the suction valve in the high pressure pump.

A kit is available and you must change the fuel filter too!

Hope this helps
