Gear problem

I am finding it difficult to get into first gear particularly when the car is cold. sometimes this affects second gear as well. The car is booked into a garage but I am concerned that my lack of knowledge might get me ripped off. Any ideas on what the problem might be, and estimated cost to fix it?

I'm by no means a mechanic, but I have a Corsa and have had the same problem, all I did was adjust my gear cable slightly, its supposed to auto adjust but a helping hand did the trick.

came across a simialr problem with my sisters car not that long ago what i done was adjusted the clutch cable out at the gear box she hasent looked back since
