2004 Vauxhall Corsa car not starting

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.3 diesel turbo sxi
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Was driving down the motorway and had the battery symbol light come on and was flashing...eventually more lights came on...and then more...soon after, the car started to lose power then i eventually pulled over!
the alternator went and so i was losing battery power as i drove...got back home had a new alternator and whilst putting it in i obviously disconnected the battery to do it...with the alternator in i charged the battery up with jump leads but car wouldn't tick over but was trying...
not sure if it needs a code because the battery was unplugged for a while...but any suggestions????

How did you charge the battery? have you got a charger or jump leads?
