1999 Vauxhall Corsa engine spluttering when not accelerating

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Year: 1999
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi,
For a while now the orange engine light has been appearing randomly on my dash. As of today however it is now appearing at ignition and when I drive at low speeds.

Firstly I experienced a loud clunking sound coming from the centre of the car when I turned off the engine but this stopped after I repeatedly turned the engine on and off about 5 times. After this I had trouble starting the car entirely. And now I have to pump the accelerator to start the engine and if I don't constantly accelerate whilst driving or if I drive too slowly then the engine light appears and the engine itself seems to splutter and want to cut out.

Unfortunately I am mechanically hopeless so I don't have a clue where to start. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance.

If the light is on then the car is recording a fault, go to a garage so they can plug into it, don't keep driving it as it is.

the engine noise you say could be the timing chain rattling as vauxhall dealers have done a recall on these to have the timing chain replaced have you had this done on your car do you know if not then i would recommend you take it to the dealers for the chain to be replaced and plugged in to there computer for the diagnostic
