my car is making a skreeching [sorry cant spell]noise not all the time only on long journeys or been out in it a lot.i havent had it serviced for a while cant afford it.my partner thinks its the brakes but says the front pads looks ok he is going to service it himself at the weekend.can u give me some idea what it might be.thanku

Do you get the noise,when the car is not moving,do you get the noise,when you start the car,does the noise get faster or louder,when you rev,the engine,or if the car is moving do you get the noise when you press your brake peddle,only,or do you get the noise when turning

could be 2 things 1 could be that the alternator belt just wants more tension putting on it or could be the brake pads as the inner pads could be worn out completely and be metal on metal but you will only know this by removing the wheels and looking at the pads if it is metal on metal then you will also need the discs

if it is not what the other people have said it could be your water pump bearing which means you have to buy a pump and gaskit
