1998 Vauxhall Corsa over heating?

Steam coming out of large hose the one attached to the rad, took of hose thinking it was split but ok,water level fine fan working, let engine run again seemed ok,
drove 1 mile down road today temp went into the red, no steam, pulled up and could hear a faint sloshing sound, water level fine but fan did not kick in this time if its the fan what am i looking at price wise or water pump price wise.

i would check thermostate first make sure all the pipes are getting warm , no air locks then test water pump, check for contamination in the oil cap and the coolant and report back
