1996 Vauxhall Corsa flashing s light

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Year: 1996
Variant: 1.4SE Auto
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My much-loved and cared-for automatic Corsa has a flashing S light on the dashboard when I try to put it in gear from cold. The engine starts fine (the car's just had new sparkplugs and alternator belt) and once it's going (after a couple of restarts and a little bit more gas), I have no further problems. I'm very tired of wondering whether I'll get off the drive every morning. Is it likely to be a gearbox switch problem or an temperature sensor problem? Or something else? The car never overheats or stalls and has done about 69,000 miles. Many thanks for any advice.

before getting a diagnostic check by your local garage, try disconnecting the electrical connectors for the gearbox spray them with wd40 reconnect and see if problem goes,as sometimes the connectors get a slight bit of corrosion on them and this can cause problems,

Answer
Hi.

Only "snowflake" light i've seen on automatic vauxhalls are ones fitted with (winter control) Which is selected by a button with either a symbol of a snowflake or the letter S. When pressed the car automatically selects 2 or 3 to give greater control during icy conditions.

Has your car got this fitted?

Also i've been informed

Its the same as an EML - engine management light - only for the Auto Transmission.

The first thing to check is the level of the transmission fluid - if it is low or empty , the light will flash. If its not that - a diagnostic machine will need to be run on the Auto Transmission to see where the fault is located - as per the fault light flashing on the dash.
