2004 Vauxhall Corsa transmission / gearbox problems

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.4 design auto
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
i have had the car for over 2 years. A few days ago whilst driving the engine cut out completely. The battery light, warning light and engine light all came on. Got towed to the garage where they replaced the alternator and battery. Drove away and the engine cut out after 5 minutes.. Restarted, only to find lots of chugging . Few things i noticed
(1) the rev counter goes erratic after touching 2500 rpm
(2) the speedometer stopped working
(3) the automatic gear indicator went blank "-" whilst the car was in 'D' mode
(4) car was driving but pick up was slow
(5) the engine light, battery light and warning light all stay on.
Please could you offer some advice as I am sure if i take it to the main dealer they will charge me a bomb and it might be something simple to replace.

Corsa's are known to have bad wiring conections behind the speedo unit, can throw up all kinds of wierd faults, that would be my first look.
