I have seen that a common problem is that the timing belt becomes loose in your type of car and this may have caused your problem. The rust I am not sure about and sounds strange.

i also had the same problem. it was due to the camshaft retainers coming loose on my exhaust camshaft which sheared it clean in half.its not an easy job to fix but i managed it on my drive. i also would say change timing kit while you have it in bits
