2002 Vauxhall Corsa oil pressure light flickering on and off. engine very noisy.

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Year: 2002
Variant: 1.2 sxi
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
Car recently had full service. The day after the service I noticed the oil pressure light flickering on and off and the engine sounded a lot noisier than usual. I took the car back to the garage and they are now saying that the car needs a new oil pump, chain etc, estimated bill £500.
Is this to be expected?

Its roughly how much as i would expect to pay. The oil pump is driven off the timing chain which is basically the same as a cam belt. Which to replace is a fairly costly operation not because of parts but because of labour charges.

Ask for a breakdown of charges before agreeing to anywork. IE how much are you charging me for the chain? pump etc

Hi, if it was quiet before you took it in, then ask them what grade of oil they have put in as its vital these little corsa`s have the correct grade and quality.
If in doubt about what they are telling you, get a second opinion.

Make sure that the oil pressure non return valve(part of the oil filter housing) is not the culprit. this will give exactly the same symptoms i.e oil light flickering/noisey engine
Speak to an engine rebuilder rather than a garage.
