2001 Vauxhall Corsa engine hunts excessively around tick over, stalling

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Year: 2001
Variant: 1.2 comfort
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
108000m,Y reg owned for 8 years,Vauxhall dealer stamps. Initially EML light on, rev counter not reading, slow on pick up fuel consumption higher. Local garage fix was crank censor, but engine running rough after this, fitted new coil ignition pack, spark plugs[not changed from new]Still not running right, new Airmassflow meter, was driven around by garage running perfect EML out, driving home serious running problems cannot control engine revs with accelerator wanting to stall if pedal lift off.I took off the plug to airflow meter car running almost perfect. Garage took car to Vauxhall diagnostics who came up with airflow meter faulty, replaced airflow meter again and airfilter, car perfect again EML off, performance pulling excellent. Day later same problem again. I managed to get it running again by letting the engine run standing still and gradually it balanced itself out so now waiting to happen again? I do still have the option to unplug the MAF but like this it sometimes wants to stall on junctions etc. So far spent £420! Vauxhall recommend ECU sent away for testing etc cost? So much for today's technology hardly anybody knows how to solve the problems properly, unless you have an endless supply of money just keep going until you hit on the right thing. All this was based on read outs and codes, when running properly read outs say no problems. Please help? Scrap heap is next step!

From the ECU,R/H side of the inlet manifold to the fuse/relay box.do the wiggle test on the whole wiring harness when it's running, dont be timid, give it a good twist/pull.I have had a couple of these with wire faults in this harness, can give all kind of strange symptoms.
But the first thing I'd do is put a vacuum gauge on the inlet manifold,it's a wierd thing made up of several parts clipped together and ANY vacuum leak anywhere will show up as a faulty AFM,So a good gauge reading would be around 14",anything less and it's drawing air in somwhere, and if it is then it's not coming through the AFM an so isn't being measured.
Vac gauges are around £20 from eBay,old school but it's never far from my hand, solves nearly as many problems as my MUCH more expensive scanner!!

Thanks a lot, I am from old school and your suggestions of wiggling wires and pipes while engine running has been something I have done in the past and I did on this car, maybe not as vigorous as you say, so will do more of that. I also tried to make sure all joints of anything dismantled on air intake side is checked for sealing. I never have done anything with your suggestion regarding vacuum so this sounds a good idea and will be trying this test, just need to get a gauge. Let you know how I get on.
