2003 Vauxhall Corsa engine not starting

Went to do shopping this morning and my Corsa starting making an awful shuddering noise the battery light came on then the engine failed, I managed to get it started again and parked up, I rang my parents for help and when they came my step dad put oil in and the tappety noise ceased but now it turns over but it just wont fire and start, help I ve only had the car since april and the garage warranty has run out !I rang the garage and the guy told me to thump the dash board as something beomes loose ! did but this didn't work !
