1997 Vauxhall Corsa engine overheating

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Year: 1997
Variant: Vegas 1.2i
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I bought the car about 3 weeks ago and notice that the indicator for the engine heat can reach 100 within 20 minutes if on a journey where alot of stopping and starting is involved. If i am driving at a consistant speed then the engine is cooled very quickly with the air flow.

The engine also smells very hot when you get out of the car.

I have checked that I have sufficient Coolant and as far as I can see the wiring for the fan is in tact and connected ok.

I have not heard the fan kick in once since driving the car though.

The fan seems to move freely if pushed by hand so the bearings are fine.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks

If not losing water , could try flushing cooling system as it could be a partially choked rad . Could also test fan is operating o.k and if not , check rad fan transmitter switch / sensor .
