Hi jimbo
I believe this to be an ECU problem. If it's the engine I'm thinking..
It will be the ECU bolted to the back of the engine on the block
It is a common problem on these old? Vans
The solder inside cracks and loses contact or sometimes just works intermittently
If you know what your doing you can cut the seal and open the ECU and under a magnifying glass you can observe any cracks and re-solder.
If you don't know what your doing then take into a garage. You could
Cause more problems :)

Hope this helps
