2006 Vauxhall Astra a grinding noise when starting the car up sometimes

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2006
Variant: 1.8 SRI
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Sometimes when starting the engine up i hear a grinding noise coming from the left hand side of the engine.
This doesnt happen all the time, but just at random times.
Would be great to know if anyone else has had this problem, and knows what it is causing this noise.
Many thanks.

May be dirt /clutch dust on starter pinion which causes it to drag on shaft as it's thrown forward or returning .If that is noise , just a case of cleaning .But could be something else , hard to say without hearing .

Hi,

I have a 56 Astra SRI 1.8 with exactly the same problem. Doesnt happen every time and only last a few seconds.
Hoping its nothing serious but getting a mechanic friend to have a look soon will let you know if I find anything out.
