2007 Vauxhall Astra gearbox cutting out

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2007
Variant: 1.8 auto
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
car has done 24.000 miles, bought from new Astra auto. Recalled for radiator replacement. On a recent journey gearbox gave up, would not move forwards or in reverse. Turned on engine after 10 minutes and car ran normally for a very short time and problem returned. Vauxhall refused out of hand to pay anything towards the £2000) cost of replacing the gearbox but we have been told by several people the problem is because of the radiator replacementand oil getting into the gearbox, which according to mechanics is burnt out. HELP

the problem is caused becaust the auto oil is cooled in the bottom of the rad,the rads let the oil and water mix. they should have checked the auto oil when the rad eas replaced.try vauxhall customer services not just the dealer they may make a good will contribution.you dont have to pay 2k try your local gearbox specialist suould save about 1k.become a pain to vauxhall call every day its only 1 year out of warrantee, they should help

This is a known and common fault where water from radiator gets into gearbox , knackering it . It's been covered here before .

The Problem

WHILST DRIVING HOME A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO, MY ASTRA JUST CUT OUT COMPLETELY. THE AA ATTENDED AND TOLD ME THAT IT WAS A GEARBOX PROBLEM. HAVE JUST BEEN TOLD MY GARAGE THAT APPARENTLY THE RADIATOR HAS BEEN LEAKING AND HAS LEAKED INTO THE AUTOMATIC GEARBOX! I HAVE NEVER NOTICED THE RADIATOR LEAKING AND IT WAS FINE WHEN THE AA ATTENDED ALSO. IT HAS BEEN MENTIONED THAT THIS MAY BE SOME SORT OF "COMMON" FAULT WITH THE RADIATOR FROM THIS MODEL - ANYONE WITH ANYMORE INFO?? THE CAR HAS ONLY DONE 50,000 IN 5 YRS, AM NO CAR EXPERT BY ANY STRETCH, BUT THIS SEEMS LIKE A MAJOR FAULT FOR A CAR WHICH HASN'T DONE THAT MANY MILES!! ANYONE KNOW OF ANY INFO???

Hi, the exact same thing has happened to me today I was driving and my car stopped I too had aa out and they said it was the radiator leaking into my oil for gearbox, and that there are matal fragments mixed with the water/oil they called a garage and was told the cost would be £1700 - £2000 for repair my car is also automatic and on 05 plate and have done 55000 miles. I have always had my service and looked after the car and cannot understand how such a major fault can happen that can cause so much damage and cost ! I was totally shocked to see that you had posted the exact same fault today on same car same year and around same mileage !

I have just been dealing with the very same thing, started losing coolant but couldnt find a leak anywhere, took it into the my garage well to cut to the chase they said the same thing.
They told me the oil from the gearbox is run into the rad to cool it but the pipes aint upto the job and then your coolant gets into the gearbox. I tried Vauxhall customer service who were very helpful and told me to take the car to a vauxhall dealer and they would look at it for me, when I asked who was going to pay for it, she said they make no garantee about any payment towards cost, so if I take it to a Vauxhall dealer its going to charge me at least 60% more than my garage and I could be left to pay for it all, on a car thats 5 years old and only 29000 miles on it.
So I decided to leave it at my garage, they have flushed the gearbox out twice, and put a new Radiator on told me to so how it goes if I get any more probs bring it back and if it needs a new gearbox they willfit one and take the price of the flushing off the bill, pretty fair I think.
A new gearbox from Vauxhall £2000 plus and then all they will do is sell the old box on to be flushed and sold second hand.
My bill was £450.

My Question should read coolant into the Gearbox.

Following the service recall to change the radiator, the vehicle only ran for a further 6,000 miles before breaking down and is only five months outside the warranty period.

" My Question should read coolant into the Gearbox. "

Thats what the reply is about , coolant from radiator into box .

Just paid £2019 for automatic gearbox replacement just to get my car back on the road.Have taken it up with Vauxhall as they refuse to pay or even contribute after 25,000 miles on the clock. All to do with the radiator recall and replacement. We have also aquired some of the used gearbox oil from the garage which we intend to have analysed. The service from Vauxhall to loyal customers is an absolute disgrace.

Did any of you get any joy following these posts (which I see were made in May 2011)? I am about to hit Vauxhall dealership with the same problem. What legal action did you take and what was the result?
